Last year my computer was displaying all the warning signs of giving up the ghost (it was quite old, and had been a constant companion for the better part of a decade, so no complaints here). And somehow in the process of updating my computer I’ve also added a lot of other new technology to … More Book Review: Perfect State
The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison is a book I had heard lots of good things about prior to reading it, so I was pretty excited when it was chosen as the March pick for the Sword & Laser book club. The Goblin Emperor can perhaps be described as the most interesting book I’ve ever read … More Book Review: The Goblin Emperor
Like all seamstresses, my absolute favorite thing in the world to do is repairs and alterations for other people. I can think of nothing that brings me more joy than the tediousness of throwing darts into an ill-fitting top, or fixing a hem line for all the shorties in my life. Seriously though, when I … More H&M Dress Refashion
I’m happy to say, after a rather lackluster year, Burda is back! Last month’s issue was really good, and this month has a few choice patterns as well. There are lots of designs that could see heavy rotation as wardrobe staples, nothing too crazy, and the Burda Plus section this month is totally drool worthy. … More Magazine Review: October Burda 2015
So, it’s been a while since I’ve sewn anything fun for myself. Actually, scratch that, it’s been a while since I’ve sewn anything for myself at all. I’d fallen into a bit of a sewing rut, and after last year’s awful summer, I hadn’t had much energy or desire to sew anything at all. This … More Pattern Review: BS-03-2013-135 – The Bridge Four Biker Jacket
When one of my favorite authors mentioned that John M. Ford was one of his favorite authors, it became a mission of mine to track down as many of his (widely-out-of-print) books as I could. It has taken me years to track the majority of them down (greatly aided by the internet in recent years), but … More Book Review: The Princes of the Air
I started listening to book podcasts on a fairly regular basis a few years ago. In an attempt to mitigate whining from my sister, who was missing her college artist community, I introduced her to a few book and writing related podcasts. Interestingly, a few months later she returned the favor by introducing me to … More Book Review: Wolf in White Van
Yes, in internet time Comic-Con is now officially old news, but as this is the first time I’ve ever been able to attend for any significant length of time (and only the second time I’ve been able to go at all) I’m still pretty hyped. Not to mention that this year’s SDCC was proof that … More A Book Nerd’s Paradise: San Diego Comic-Con 2015 Recap
I first heard about Uprooted on Tor’s Rocket Talk podcast (Episode 54), when the host was absolutely gushing over the latest novel by fantasy author Naomi Novik. The podcast’s host often gives positive reviews about (some) of the books he mentions, but I have rarely heard him as excited as he was about Uprooted. Shortly thereafter, Uprooted was again … More Book Review: Uprooted
The Fall/Winter Burda Plus has been posted to the Russian Burda website. This issue, as with most of the Burda Plus magazines, contains a fair number of reprints from the regular editions. Fortunately, I think Burda picked some of the best patterns from recent issues, so overall this magazine is a pretty solid collection of … More Burda Plus Fall/Winter 2015
