Adventures in Bra Sewing: Another Black Beauty Bra

My last post went into a deep dive on this pattern, so this is going to be more of a quick “look what I made” situation. When I was ordering some of Emerald Erin’s specialty wires, I couldn’t help myself and bought a few of the fancier Black Beauty kits as well, including the Cassiopeia kits for the Black Beauty and the Friday French Cuts that I used to make this set.

I’ve seen a lot of hacks to the Emerald Erin Black Beauty Bra for style changes, but my alterations were pretty simple, and I think you can still see the basic shape of the original pattern in my final result.

I wasn’t sure which design elements I wanted to keep and which I wanted to edit, so again I went to Procreate to draw out a plan using My Body Model croquis so I could decide how to edit the pattern.

Since my first version fit pretty well, I only made a few alterations to the band to remove some of the excess width I’d added to the bridge, and lower the under arm a bit to better match the length of the 46 Bliss wire I was using. Style wise, I left off the power bar, but did split the band for use with mirrored lace, and I added the wide strap to include more lace along the neckline edge. I also changed the back to a ballet back because that’s my preferred back style. For the Friday French Cuts I used my previously modified version that has quite a bit more coverage in the back than comes standard in the pattern.

And here is my second version of the Black Beauty:

The kit is mostly made from bra tulle and embroidered tulle lace. I’ll be honest that it was kind of a pain to work with so many very sheer layers, but in the end I’m really quite pleased with the construction and how nice the materials are, so here are a few close ups of the details:

I really like how this set turned out, and it’s quite unlike most of my other bras because I haven’t adventured much into the use of bra tulle other than as a lining until now. I was really pleased with the quality of the materials from Emerald Erin, and I am really happy with how this kit turned out. I have a few others, but I think I may move on and try some other patterns before diving into them. I have a busy few months ahead of me, so I’m not sure how much sewing I’ll be getting done, but I’ll try my best to get things posted in a timely manner, though I will admit it took me the better part of the month to get this post up. Hopefully more sewing to post soon!

    1. The ballet back is also called the scoop back – it’s where there is a rounded opening coming up from the hook and eye closure to the strap attachment. The Black Beauty is drafted with a T-back or straight back band where the strap comes and attaches perpendicular to the top of the back band. Basically, I added the rounded scoop shape because it allows the back band to be a bit taller and have more coverage across the back. It can help with support and also the smoothing shape, though depending on how the strap is attached it might also contribute to straps falling off the shoulders so some people don’t prefer the ballet back style.
