Monthly Sewing Review – 2023 May Wrap Up

I can’t even believe May is wrapping up. I feel like it’s been a whirlwind month, even though it’s been relatively calm in terms of travel and scheduled events. I did have a lot of stuff I needed to get done this month, though, so I still didn’t have a lot of sewing time.

Sewing Progress

I didn’t have any real sewing progress this month, but in the midst of some diva hard drives proclaiming near-failures I did end up getting several new external hard drives, which I used my Cricut to label. I honestly wouldn’t recommend this; the vinyl really didn’t want to stick to the soft-touch silicone-y casings, but I was sort of able to place the cut letters where I wanted them and they haven’t just totally fallen off yet. I think this label system is not at all robust, but it’s better than the sticky-note labels that didn’t even stick to the drives at all…

In other sewing news, my sister is working on some new projects, so I have been advising on pattern alterations and constructions advice, which has been kind of fun. Reminds me that I want to get back into the sewing space and working with textiles and not just paper and vinyl projects.

I also had a bit of a fun holiday weekend and taught my boyfriend to use my sewing machine to make some replacement elastic and velcro straps for some sporting equipment. We went through the basics of threading the machine, pivoting at corners, backstitching, etc. It was not a very in depth project, but it was fun to bring another person over to the dark side…. er, I mean, teach a practical pragmatic skill.

Sewing Delays

Basically it’s been the case of I haven’t been sewing because I’ve had to prioritize other things (teaching and taking online classes, work stuff, etc.). I know I have been jokingly saying I’m looking forward to August, but I’m really looking forward to August. Even though the more I discuss things with other people, the more it’s looking like August won’t be this total reprieve that I was hoping for. But maybe I can create a better balance of things at that time, which will hopefully be a more sustainable long-term workload and hopefully have some more sewing and crafting time than I do now.

Finished Projects

No personal sewing projects got done this month, but I did teach my boyfriend to sew and helped make some elastic and velcro strap replacements for sporting equipment. I also have a lot of half-done and nearly-done Cricut projects that should be able to wrap up in early June.

WIPs & Upcoming Plans

I’ve got several Cricut projects that are in-progress because I’m waiting on delivery of a few supplied. Most of these are commissioned projects, so I’m not sure if I will be posting pictures, but I will say I’ve gotten very into print and cut holographic stickers. I’m working on improving the process and creating a better product, so it’s been an interesting bit of iteration. In terms of sewing, I have so many half-done projects I want to get back to… but I’m just going to have to see what I have time for and what grabs my interest when I get more reliably back into the sewing room in a few months.
